The Eretz Yisrael Museum  - located outside the center of the Tel Aviv city, in the Ramat Aviv area, is one of the most popular , visited and overwhelmingly informative places to visit, not just in Tel Aviv, not even just in Israel - if you are Jewish, then this is something you must see. It shows the visitors almost every sector of some essence of Judaism and Israel in so many different ways and offers so much that other museums do not. 

It is without a doubt one of the most unique experiences that I have had whilst touring this country. When taking an interest as a traveler, you need to take a lot of factors into account, of course, the history is one of them. Here at the Eretz Yisrael Museum, is a place that not just offers a huge amount of historical knowledge but also - art, science, glass-work, archaeology, and many more.

Essentailly , we are talking about a large garden type area, with "miniature museums" dotted around.

So a few things to know in advance. Firstly, allow an entire day for this. Plan ahead, and find out if there are large tour groups visiting on the day you wan to go. If there are, then going on that day is simply not an option. So make sure you plan in advance. do your own research - there is a lot to see here. The museum itself is open from 10.00 am until 8.30 on some days and allows yo to leave and return within the same day provided you hold onto your ticket.

Within this time, you need to visit the Planetarium , there are two films which they offer, one at 11.30 and one at 1.00 , with a break in between as each video lasts an hour. One is about stars and the solar system and the other is about astronauts. Again , book in advance, you need to sort out which language you require.

This museum isn't just based around tourism.Its a huge attraction for the people of Israel itself, what with school trips and people of Israel using their spare time to explore their own countries  history. So essentially , the option of it being in English, is not their priority here, although everything is in English, you just need to book in advance.

So - what exactly is there to see here? - In a nutshell there are several of these little museums which you visit , going from one to the other and in between your day you fit in the planetarium and lunch at the classy restaurant on the premises. 

I am not going to spoil all the fun by giving you what a tour guide could offer!  What you need to know, is soak up and quiz your tour guide as much as possible, do not walk around with a camera in front of you the entire time and pay attention to detail!

In addition to all of the above, there is the Rothschild Center, which offers temporary exhibitions, so do your research and see what is on offer - you may need to book well in advance, these change every few weeks, and are one of the most popular features here, so baring that in mind  - plus, a lot of the visitors were there just to see the displays in the Rothschild center, to keep that in mind when planning your time here.

Overall - This is something everyone can enjoy, all ages, and is an opportunity to absorb a huge amount of knowledge and information as well as unique experiences, in one place. Of course there are other amazing museums around Israel with so much other specific focus points, but if you are wanting to get  really good rounded amount of knowledge gained in a limited amount of time , then this is the place to be.

The Namal - Tel Aviv - Milestones Israel

Outside the City Centre of Tel Aviv, closer to the Ramat Aviv area, is the Namal. This is a great area, which offers a quietened down atmosphere where you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon or lunchtime with your tour group or family. It has a few different things to offer. Besides the beautiful sea views, there is a small shopping area, and a bridge with "Love Locks".

Ideally if you are looking for some tranquility in such a eventful city then this is an ideal place to visit. In addition, it also has a sizable playground that can keep the kids entertained for enough time for you to enjoy the beach and shopping. Its a different atmosphere the main Tel Aviv beach areas, as it is much quieter and gives you the opportunity to still get some really beautiful views.

Markets/Shouks always have this atmosphere different from your average shopping experiences worldwide.There is always the pushiness of the workers trying so hard to make a sell - so now imagine your standardized market Balagan with Israeli  essence combined...right in the heat of competitiveness of it all..

2) Nachlat Binyamina - This is an Arts/Craft Market, right beside the Carmel Market. What you need to know - It is only on twice a week, on a Tuesday and on a Friday, from 9.30 until 4. A word of advice- go early in the morning. It will be less busy so you can enjoy it at your leisure and also , the artists will not constantly be competing for a sale. Later on in the day it is really buzzing and although it has a great atmosphere, there is a lot to take in , and you can only fully absorb it all when you do it at your own pace. Amazing uniqueness with stories behind each artist, so be sure to allow yourself enough time to quiz them about their background inspiration.

3) Jaffa Port - The Jaffa Port is probably one of the most popular attractions to go to. Very popular with tourists all over the globe and there is something that meets everyone's tastes. From past experiences, every time I go I find something new. From being offered cardamon coffee at a Yemenite jewelers, to watching all the brides and grooms having their pictures taken in crowds of tourists, to the markets selling everything under the sun, unlimited time should be spent here. Plus there is some amazing restaurants across the sea front that definitely should not be missed out on.

4) Eretz Yisrael Museum and Planetarium - There are a number of museums to spend your time exploring in Tel Aviv,however if you have a limited time to spend here, there are a few to make a priority. The Eretz Yisrael museum, will definitely require a full day of your time. one way to describe it , is that there are "mini" museums in a large garden area, plus the planetarium. The planetarium has shows on twice a day , between 11.30 and 13,30. Be sure to ask in advance for your own language. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore and you will get the full benefit. These other little museums, have a lot to take in for you, and in order to nourish your curiosity and feed your mind with Israel's history, this museum requires your full attention so be prepared to be amazed.

5) Diezengoff & Allenby  & Azreli Centre- The most central shopping areas in central Tel Aviv. If you have a hidden shopaholic within you , then yes, some "rationed" time spent shopping here will do no harm. There is plenty to feed your shopping appetite, with unique styles to each of these. Diezengoff is generally a large shopping center, plus a long street with markets dotted along the way. Think of it as regular shopping with an essence of Israeli spiced flavor.  Allenby Street is focused mainly around the Carmel Market, but bare in mind that there is still some more shopping to see there, and it gets quieter in this area, so the pressure to haggle and buy isn't quite so fierce.

Finally the Azreli Centre. Three tall office buildings with an attached shopping mall at the bottom. Sure you can do all your shopping here, with westernized civilized normality, but the benefit of going here is the opportunity to go to the top and get an amazing view of the City. For 15 shekels and before 4 pm , you can elevate to the top and admire the view. 

6) The Namal - Located near the Ramat Aviv area of Tel Aviv, is the Namal. Bare in mind to check out the other blogs which give much more information about the Namal. Generally it is a great place for lunch or some picturesque views of the ocean without having the more hustle and bustle of the main beach in Tel Aviv. Here it is a little more relaxed, and very calm with again some shopping and also some people decide to do their fishing here. In addition to this, it is considered a very romantic place, as you wander over the bride you will notice the padlocks intertwined on the metal...a tradition all over the globe, but yet in somewhere like Tel Aviv, this was a surprise to find.

7)Neve Tzedek - Absolutely 100% do not miss out on this. I was completely astonished by the beauty of this place hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. Here is where you will find some exquisite artwork and architecture, some very stylish shops, with little cafes and restaurants dotted along the way. It gradually leads you to the old train station and then to a courtyard, again with the brides and grooms having their pictures taken, which contributes to everyone being bewildered by such an amazing and beautiful place. 

8)Blind Museum - Holon - Again, Yes there are many museums to see in Tel Aviv ,but this has its own level of uniqueness , something that I would recommend for the whole family. It is a chance for the youth of today to realize what  the blind go through every day. Even for myself it was such a grasping experience, emotional but also fascinating. Again, allow plenty of time to see this. 

9) Diasporah Museum - Again , you should allow yourself plenty of time to really absorb and soak everything up that this museum has to offer. It has a lot to offer , everything from models of ancient synagogues from everywhere on earth, to tracing your own family tree. In addition to this , there are temporary exhibitions (so do some research in advance) . When I visited there was an exhibition of the history of Jewish bridal gowns. Really intriguing and something entirely unique that you will not find anywhere else. 

10) Independence Hall - The independence hall is something which a lot of tour trips offer. It is something vital to Israel's history and the routes of Israel independence in Israel as a united nation. It is such an essential part of this country that anyone who wants a full well rounded knowledge of the country's background, this is well worth a visit. Especially if you have children or teenagers with you, this is something that can explain a lot , and even for adults to, for perhaps the people who need a good basic background of knowledge about how our independence began.

Bai Hai Gardens - Haifa - Milestones Israel

The Ba Hai Gardens in Haifa is really , very much something which you do not want to miss out whilst spending your time in Israel. Indeed it is a Hidden Gem, I had to do my research and even then it was not until you find out about such a place that you can start to learn more and figure out how you can get there. 

The gardens itself and the experience itself will be more than enough to motivate you to come there and keep you in awe. However when travelling, it is always good to know a few things first. So, most importantly, make sure you are there in plenty of time. The shrine is at the bottom(the building with the dome on top) is only open until 12, so if you are wanting to see that then be there early enough to enjoy it. Afterwards, you can either walk, or catch the bus to the top of the gardens. There are 800 stairs to climb, so yes, it is best to take the bus. When you are at the top , just at 12 noon, there is an organised tour. They are very helpful, and are full of information, giving you plenty of background knowledge and help you to get a better idea of the Ba Hai belief. At the end of the walk through the stairs and the gardens there is the option to follow the tour guide for another few moments , or to watch a 20 minute video( highly recommended , as it is hard to hear a lot of what the tour guide was saying.) 

Bare a few things in mind before you go. A lot of places in Israel expect modest dress and for much respect. Even though it isnt a Jewish place, this is still a time where much subtlety is needed. When you are in the gardens itself , you are fine to take pictures and videos. In the shrine itself ,that is not an option whatsoever. No phones, no cameras, and even no shoes. So it is best to be prepared for that. 

The gardens are really well maintained with manicured grass and the entire place is maintained on a daily basis...by a combination of volunteers, people from the belief itself , and trained professionals. They finished the garden in 2001 and started in the early 1920's. In addition to this, there are around 200,000 lights/lamps that lead the way when dark, and also make it visible on the train or buses when leading into or out of Haifa. 

Throughout the gardens (there are 8 "levels" and on each of these levels there is two smaller fountains and also one main one. At the sides of the stairs there is water flowing through  - all the way down to the bottom - , and the special palm trees that are grown there soak up the excess water , which contributes to the maintenance greatly.

In the Greek Building, this is where sacred documents are kept , and in the white dome building is there "parliament". The video explains more about this but basically, it is a world wide religion with people from all four corners of the earth. The reason for these gardens is a general belief that G-d shows his beauty in nature and this is their way of making it stronger. Well this is what my outcome and conclusion was at least anyways. I came out of the gardens completely overwhelmed with so much to take in, not just knowledge but the fact that I had seen such a high maintenance place, that I totally was not expecting. 

If you are looking for something in Haifa to do then yes this is definitely a priority. However , most of the people who we met, were not in the gardens to kill time in Haifa, they were in Haifa to see the gardens. Make it a priority to see them, you will not regret it.

The sports center for the disabled, is an opportunity to really value your time here in Israel , and contribute to something off the beaten track, at the sports center, it has a few known successful highlights, mainly that you can participate in the wheelchair basketball events, which allows you to either be included in their teams, or if you are in a large enough group yourselves, you can use the facilities and the court to play against each other Especially if you have younger travelers in your group , this is something that will really open them up and help them to appreciate something which they may not be able to experience back home

Lastly I will briefly mention that some of the past participants we were told have participated in Paralympics! this really opened me up and made me more determined because it made me realize how something so unique can turn into something so successful...

Nachlat Binyamina has a huge range of Artist's work to admire, but one of the many that caught my eye , was DESY - Newspaper Designs. So here is what I can tell you about Desy and her designs.

Blind Museum - Holon Israel - Milestones Israel

Last week I had an amazing opportunity given to me by Milestones Israel...

I was given the chance to visit the Blind museum based in Holon , just outside of Tel Aviv. It is a once in a lifetime experience that will only be available to you in this part of the world. It gave me so much to think about - from as soon as I entered the area, to afterwards, I  had so much to think about , it totally gave me a completely new perspective on the Blind people of this world.

So what I would like to highlight are a few things. Firstly , the fact that our tour itself was lead by a blind man

Secondly - The different changes between each room has certain effects on each person in the group. and lastly...the location

I am going to try and focus on the positive things. This is a place that needs to be praised...it is something that part of the world has to deal with on a daily basis, and more than anything else -the museum is designed for children. It's actually called "the children's museum". Even though there are different sections which you can visit, the museum itself is designated mostly to kids. - this is incredibly a great idea...as it makes them so much aware of people who are blind. There is the concept that there are kids in this world which we know live in a world that they are not even aware that there are blind people. However it compromises several things just for the kids. It isn't just some boring museum where you walk around, look at stuff and go home afterwards thinking I went to a museum today. It is an experience itself - very interactive, you need to use all your other senses, and be totally focused the whole time.

So at the beginning, we all sit down in the front of the museum, we are introduced to a guy- who we later find out is partially blind - but none of us even picked up on that. He tells us about how to get the most of the museum , how to experience it safely, and a bit of an outline of the history of the place. he then mentioned briefly we will be lead by a blind person... this is  not what any of us were expecting...

So then we are told about lockers...we are told we can bring in NOTHING...no phones ,no watches , nothing with the slightest bit of reflections light...absolutely nothing.. so we all go over to the lockers and put our stuff away. Then we come back , and we go in through a door... where we are given a blind stick and told how to use it...i.e don't lift it off the floor, how to use it in a U shape..., then the partially blind man leads us to the darkness gradually and gradually until we are in blackness...feeling around for a wall. We now start to hear a new voice...our new friend who we will be leading us around . He directs us where to lean and stand and how to feel who you are walking into...we all line up against a wall. there is absolutely no light.It's not like your room at night where your eyes adjust to the darkness and eventually you will see. Frankly - I found it more comfortable to keep my eyes closed for most of the tour...I didn't think I would need to keep them open as there is nothing to see. But gradually you find that you should keep them open, just for the sake of making yourself appear like a regular blind person. 

He leads us through several rooms all requiring that you use different senses in order to tell where you are...just a few examples... a market where we had to smell the rotten fruit...a boat where we felt the water on us...a music room where we lied down on the carpet and felt the vibrations of the music...and a rain-forest where there were monkeys and water and rain and so many other features that I am not even aware of...Most important i should mention...WE ARE NEVER GOING TO SEE THESE ROOMS IN LIGHT...I asked that at the end...he simply replied that there are no lights and therefore we will not be able to see it. It was also incredible... I visited this place on my own...and I feel like I became immediate best friends with a bunch of strangers on their own day tour...afterwards we chatted for half an hour about their trip...we would never have bonded without this experience..

Ok...so I said I would focus on the positive...the location itself is pretty hard to find. I was on my own, I relied on public transport, Google maps and Moovit to get there. I didn't know anyone to show me around and there was also the language barrier. I gave up when I was about ten minutes away to hitch a taxi who took me right up there. I then had to walk through a park and a basket ball court to eventually get to the door.

A word of advice- go here either with someone who drives, or with a large tour group - it appeared the large groups are allowed to enter into the museum parking lot...one more thing very important...you need to book in advance in order to be there with a tour of your language. Without a booking you simply will not be able to enter.

Purim 2014 has Arrived - Milestones Israel

Today the event of Purim has begun…the streets are covered with children on their way to school in costume, all the stalls in the markets are outselling their costume accessories, and those in the city will not be able to pass through without being aware that something is going on today.

Purim celebrates the story of Esther in the Torah…and for the festival of Purim , we can celebrate it in so many different ways, in Israel however, Judaism has been completely modernized and only a small essence of the origin of Purim is captured.

The costumes are the main aspect and the highlight for children and those of us still ready to celebrate such an event. We also share “Mishloach Menott” which are goodies you share with friends on Purim. In addition to all of the above, another activity is of course to eat hamantaschen…which are customized to look like Haman’s ears(the villain in the story of Purim) which are triangular pointy shaped biscuits with a filling of jam or sometimes chocolate.

And lastly…the most important of these customs is to drink and drink until you cannot tell those in costume from those dressed normally…even those more orthodox celebrate by drinking themselves into deliriousness.

Enjoy this holiday as much as possible, it is one of the most commonly celebrated event in the world of Judaism, and should be done with high spirits, just like the story of Purim itself. Rockets into Roses

After visiting the Art Fair in Tel Aviv last Tuesday Nachlat binyamin, and returning back home, my roommate told me of a company or organisation called "rockets into roses"

He was handed the remaining pieces of metal from the rocket by the police near the area. He then decided to make them into several different products...necklaces, menorahs, and other jewelry, all of which are limited additions to state the obvious, it was all made from the same event and the same rockets.

Wait  - it gets better. A portion of the money which he receives from this, he contributes to building into above ground bomb shelters in the Ashkelon area...my roommate told me this and I could not believe what an idea had come into this world, partially shock, and also awe too.

Purim - From Cinderella to Queen Esther - Milestones Israel

Two very different stories have happened in Israel over the years, both of which include 3 very similar factors-

Nachlat Binyamin - Itueti art & designs - Milestones Israel

This week for the first time since my stay in Israel ( I have now been living here for 6 months) I managed to get round to visiting the Art & Craft Fair in Tel Aviv. Its right beside the Carmel Market Shouk , on Allenby Street, on a Tuesday and also a Friday , from 9.30,  until 4.30.Best time ( especially for a blogger or if you want to capture some personal information about the artists) is to go first thing in the morning, when you can avoid all the rush and overwhelmed tourists.

I too was overwhelmed at this event. I decided right away I will be visiting again and again, as I didn't get nearly as much as I wanted to in the amount of time I spent there.

So this post is focused on Tueti art & designs  - what I can summarize is , it is basically "ART WITH COINS".

Really it depends how much of your time you have spent in art fairs and how much you have seen in the past. With a small amount of my time here I haven't had that much time spent seeing Art. I walked up and down the full stretch of the market before I noticed a guy chiseling away at something which I couldn't even see because it was so small. Turns out it was a coin. Then I began to look at what was on his table. There were coins from all over the world. What caught my attention the most was the 20 pence coin from the UK, where it was the queens head with space around her head all chiseled and gone. It was made into a necklace , as an elegant piece of his jewelry collection for display.

Something so simple that we spend or collect every day lying in your purse or wallet and it has been made into a fine piece of jewelry , that everyone would ask about. It's amazing for me to see that something so basic such as coins can be turned into something you wear as jewelry.

Is tourism in Israel a safe experience??? - Milestones Israel

So, you have made the decision to come to the Holy Land - Eretz Israel - Great you are one step closer to having an amazing experience of a life time, and you will have lots to tell your friends when you get home and take some beautiful pictures too. What happens next is very interesting. For your Jewish friends, they will understand, ask where you are visiting when you will be there - and the usual questions just like any other trip...when do you return etc.

And then you tell people at work, or your non Jewish friends...perhaps in a casual conversation. They already know you are Jewish. There was always a possibility that you would visit Israel. So when you announce you are coming here for a trip , why all this curious, anxious,negative feedback? They already knew it was always a possibility, something that would crop up at some point!

Well apart from the obvious points, yes Israel is on the news a LOT, yes we know what is happening here, and yes we have major security overload like no other country in the world. We are entirely aware of this when visiting or booking a trip here.

So back to the main question. How safe is it to come here as a tourist. In all fairness tourists are living the most secure and safe experience that the average Israeli isn't even exposed to. You will be staying most likely in a hostile environment outside of your room. With questions asked every time you enter and exit the hotel building, handbag inspections every time you enter shopping malls, banks , train and bus stations, and lets not forget about the airport experience like no other.

360 degrees of  your body is inspected in a radar type machine that will pick up on anything remotely suspicious. the airport staff ask every question under the sun with every reference to weaponry imaginable.
You are even told to make space for extra time for checking in because it will take more time.

Once you arrive,you are on very safe ground as everywhere you go is this consistent suspiciousness of every person on the street. Your experience as a tourist will be very safe - no doubt about it. You will be visiting standardized tourism districts and landmarks that have overwhelming popularity with tourists from all over the world. Personalised Tourism is one way of prioritizing your worries. It allows for you to be that little bit more careful every time you are out.

If you are in Israel and their happens to be some "event" occurrence whilst you happen to be visiting, the smartphones will be out ASAP examining the news and apps of Jpost  alerts will be non-stop. This is for your own benefit. Better to know everything than not knowing anything.

So to summarize - YES it is a safe experience when you are touring Israel, your tour organisation/company/guides make it their priority. Israeli's are known for their standardization of security,  even though the non Jewish people of this world are hasty about your trip, you shouldn't be.

Carmel Market - Shouk - Milestones Israel

Within the heart of Tel Aviv's busiest hustle and bustle ,lies the Carmel Market. This isn't just a landmark feature that I am talking about. It is one of the biggest attractions to Tel Aviv's tourism, even tourists come to Tel Aviv just to see the market , to haggle, and to experience the full Israeli character which we hear and know so well.

As well as finding unique jewelry  and typical holiday souvenirs, this isn't the reason you come here...not just for shopping. It is such a story to tell to everyone back home. Markets or "shouks" around the world may have similar features, but this is done the Jewish way - the Israeli way. With the in your face attitude, you really just need to soak it all up and indulge in it. It is done with passion and care, all these people working here are individuals who are working for their loved ones, and take pride in the fact they are working for our beliefs.

So much more than just a row of market stalls. Be sure to put this on your Israel list of things to do and do not miss out.

Discovering New People - The Chabad Chickpea - Milestones Israel - Pantry Packers

An incredible story and person which I met when at a convention in Tel Aviv recently, was a Chabad Rabbi,who participates in an idea that took my mind by storm.

Volunteers who come and work to help (even Tourists are open to this opportunity) and donate their time by helping to process food stables such as Chickpeas and other dried goods. 

This event is completely free of charge, takes 90 minutes to complete and is available from everyone aged 8-80, so really there is no reason to not get involved!

Its a heartwarming event to take part in and is really an experience that is something to tell the world about,especially back home,where you may find, that an activity like this, so generous, will shock people, whereas in Israel, Mitzvot like these are carried out on a daily basis and is even growing, as an activity to do in your time in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem where Chabad is based.

Neve Tzedek - Tel Aviv Yafo - Milestones Israel

The city of Tel Aviv has an unbelievable amount of attractions waiting for tourists to attend and admire. You could easily spend all your time here shopping,sunbathing and browsing the streets just watching all that is happening. For the real traveler within you however, there are some other places which you will need to look a little harder for. 

Neve Tzedek is one of them. Near to Yafo ,or alternatively walk down Allenby a few minutes past the market and make a right turn , you will find Neve Tzedek. It itself is a neighborhood. You will know you have arrived in two ways, firstly , it has quietened down quite a bit in comparison of the hustle and bustle of the streets nearer to Allenby. Secondly, you need to look up and take in the architecture  - here is where its uniqueness is defined. I can only describe it as something very Mediterranean  and vintage with a slight westenders type attitude from the people surrounding. 

In the first few minutes after snapping away at doorways and over-hanging balconies, you will pick up on the stores. Mostly health-food stores( an enormous amount of health goods that you may not be able to find around Tel Aviv - here is where they have been hiding) and some upper-class cafes and boutique clothing stores. Follow through the small cobbled lane streets and you will be lead to bike path through a park area, and after that you will get to Neve Tzedek's main feature - which essentially is an old train station.

Enjoy the views and get snap happy with the railway you can walk on , and delicately designed trains you can explore. In addition to all of this ,there is a much more upmarket courtyard design of a shopping mall, again with slightly more elite marketed stores, and some divine cafes and restaurants.

Recently when visiting ,I attended the chocolate festival. An amazing time of the year to go as I could really be overwhelmed with my surroundings and enjoy all the chocolate to ogle.

So...why did he choose such a name? In what relation do milestones have to do with anything related towards tourism?
